When I was in college, I remember thinking that photographers were the cheaters of the art world. They are not actually creating art. They are just "taking pictures" and that could not possibly be as challenging as the massive painting that I was working on. Fast forward several years. I became a mother. When I saw how quickly those delicate newborn features faded away, I knew that photography was not about just taking pictures. It was about capturing the details and memories that are so fleeting. They are preserving what we cannot get back.
When you invest (yes, it is and investment) in professional photography, you are investing in someone who has had YEARS of practice, education, experience. They have probably lost a lot of sleep, shed a lot of tears, and poured every ounce of their energy into becoming a better photographer. Your photographer has probably spent thousands of dollars on their gear, education, insurance, and all of the other extras that come along with the job. You are getting their expert eye and creating an experience with them.
Your photographer also has to make a living. What you do not see when you see the price tag that comes with professional portraits is the behind- the- scenes work. Most self -employed photographers, like me, do everything start to finish. From initial contact with the client, to booking and arranging the shoot, the hours involved with the session including drive time, several hours of editing after the session, loading and delivery of galleries- it is all a part of your photographer's job. They don't just show up and take photos. Believe me, I wish it was that easy. Their time is valuable. You are paying for their time away from their family, their skills, and their passion for their trade.
I am well aware of how expensive the cost of living is today. I know that some days it feels defeating. Professional photography is a luxury. It is not something that is attainable for everyone at this present time. However, when you are willing to spend the extra to get professional portraits, you are investing in memories. You are purchasing an heirloom that can be passed on from generation to generation. Only you can determine when the right time is to make that investment.
