It's officially football season. The crisp fall air wafting through the bleachers not to be overshadowed by the smell of stadium food.


If you've ever been to a Fort Hill football game, track meet, or a Saturday morning pee wee event, you know the concession stand is the heartbeat of the stadium. It's where you grab a hot dog, nachos, stadium pizza, or a cold drink- but what most people don't realize is what it takes to keep those windows open.


At Greenway Avenue Stadium, the band parents are the ones who make it happen. Not just for football games, but for EVERY event that uses the field. The parents are not just casually hanging out back there. They have full time jobs, families, and responsibilities of their own, and yet they give up their evenings and weekends to keep concessions running so that money can be raised for the needs of the band students.


We're talking four to five hours (or more) spent prepping, cooking, and cleaning- on top of working a full day. Some parents show up game after game because there is no sign- up sheet. There's no roster. Whoever shows up IS the help. And sometimes, there's barely enough of them to keep things going.


And yet, despite all of this, there are always complaints.

"Why is this line so long?"

"Why is it taking so long for my food?"

"Why don't they have more people back there?"

"This new system sucks!" (Actually, it has improved efficiency)


Here's the truth: those people back there are ALL volunteers. They are doing the best they can with the hands they have. When you complain, you're not just criticizing service- you're discouraging the very people who showed up to make sure the concession stand was open for that event.


And here's something important- you don't have to be a band parent to help. If you're someone who thinks they could run things better, grab a pair of gloves and join us for a night. Or, better yet, if you just want to help just because- PLEASE DO! The concession stand is not a closed club- it's a place where extra hands are always welcome. Your time and effort go right back into supporting the students and the programs that make Fort Hill special.


The reality is some parents never help at all! They have kids in band, color guard, or the Sentinelettes and yet they've never once worked a shift. That puts more weight on the few who do show up.


If we want to keep this tradition alive, if we want concessions to stay open and thriving, then it's time for everyone to step up. Volunteer just once or twice a season. Say thank you to the tired individuals handing you your fries. Be patient when the line is long-it means you're not the only one supporting this program.


Because at the end of the day, it's not just about the food. It's about community. And the community runs better when we all pitch in.
